Medical History: The origin of the expression "Blowing smoke up one’s arse" 😀
I came across this a while ago and thought it was good fun. Apparently the Victorians used to believe that introducing tobacco smoke into the rectum by means of an enema kit, was a a cure for drowning. Accordingly, these devices were placed all along the Thames river in London.
Tobacco smoke enemas became very much in vogue, and were used to treat everything from headaches to cholera!
