How Focused Ultrasound Therapy Works
Ultrasound Waves: FUS employs sound waves that are directed at a precise point within the body. These waves are generated by a transducer, which converts electrical energy into sound energy.
Focusing Mechanism: Similar to how a magnifying glass focuses light to a single point, the ultrasound waves are generated from several different points and directed so that they converge at a single point which can be at any depth within the body.
Thermal Effect: The focused ultrasound waves generate heat at the point of convergence, raising the temperature just at that one point without affecting the surrounding tissues. This thermal effect can destroy or alter just those targeted cells and not anything else around them.
Mechanical Effect: In some cases, the ultrasound waves can also create mechanical effects, such as cavitation (the formation of tiny bubbles), which can disrupt the targeted tissue.
